The Executive political intelligence Coaching (EpiC)™ Profile and the Political Intelligence Profile (PIP)™ have been designed to enable people working in complex roles and structures to develop a more positive understanding and use of political behaviours.

Organisational politics, irrespective of whether it is called ‘workplace politics’; the ‘grapevine’; the ‘old boy’ or ‘old girl’ network; the ‘informal’ communication channel; organisational 'lobbying’; ‘political savvy’, etc. It is a real and ever present (yet least openly talked about) aspect of organisational life and is frequently used in 'matrixed' structures as a positive influencing tool.

Most people, irrespective of their organisational position, when asked about political behaviours in the workplace will typically talk about the negative aspects. This often results from their own experiences of workplace politics, or is based on their observations of colleagues having ‘suffered’ from the negative use of organizational politics.

This 'negative' view is reinforced in the majority of books written on the topic, which often irresponsibility suggest retaliatory, ‘get your own back’ methods as a way to deal with negative political behaviour. The only thing you get when you use more negative political behaviours to 'fight' negative office politics, is even worse negative behaviours ! This is simply a destructive spiral.

There is significant research that highlights the detrimental effect negative politics has on both individual and organisational performance, and a growing body of evidence that indicates negative political behaviours increases when people expereince an increased level of ambiguity, complexity or change their working environment.

This does not only apply to matrix type structures, where complexity and ambiguity are an inherent part of the structure, but to the kind of ambiguity and complexity experienced by people when they are undergoing significant transformational changes.
